Ex-Woodward detective accused of stealing methamphetamine from police evidence room

WOODWARD, Okla. — A former Woodward police detective was charged with 13 felony counts after prosecutors accused him of stealing methamphetamine from the police department’s evidence room.

Michael Albert Morton appeared in court Thursday and was released after posting a $20,000 bond. Authorities allege that Morton admitted stealing the drug between May 2009 and March 2010 to give to his wife, whom he has since divorced.

According to an affidavit, the Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation found that 67 items of evidence that contained methamphetamine appeared to have been tampered with.

Prosecutor James Boring told the Woodward News (http://is.gd/Tv7aOS ) he agreed with a $20,000 bond because Morton has no prior criminal history.

“I didn’t feel like there’s any risk that he will not appear at any of his future court hearings,” Boring said.

An attorney for Morton didn’t return a message seeking comment Friday.

Morton, who was a detective with the Woodward Police since March 2002, resigned from the police department on July 12, 2010.
